Annoyed with critters creeping into your home? Then you should find these tips to be extra helpful for renovating your home in a fashion that will keep disgusting pests out of your property. You can hire a local contractor to make the renovations for you.
Seal Up the Doors and Windows
Tiny bugs find easy ways into your homes, such as through cracks in the walls, doors, windows and floors. Even if you don’t see them, they’re likely there. You can have a contractor come by to replace windows and doors or seal them up to keep bugs out. This should be done for the interior and exterior of your home. An aluminum or steel threshold beneath the door is another great way to keep insects from easily invading your home. Another option is to have a sweep installed, which is usually made up of vinyl, nylon or neoprene. These are easily installed beneath the door, closing up the gap that most front and back doors have.
Install Screens
If you enjoy having the windows and doors wide open during the warm months, then you will find that you’re inviting more than sunlight and fresh air inside of your home. To keep out critters, you can have a screen door installed, along with screens for your windows. If you have an outdoor pool, you can have a screen installed around it and have it attached to the back of your home. This way, you can enter the pool area without worrying about being attacked mosquitoes or letting in unwanted insects.
Keep Your Lawn Maintained
Having tall grass allows bugs to overpopulate. Make sure to keep your grass low and get rid of any standing water that can act as breeding ground for mosquitoes and other annoying insects. If you notice that parts of your lawn have puddles, it could be due to thatch buildup, which can be due to drainage issues caused by a slope in the lawn. Have gutters and drains installed to help channel out the accumulating water.
Seal Holes of Pipes and Wires
When you have a utility installation done, holes are made to allow the pipes or cables to run throughout your home. These holes make for great entry points for insects. Some installers apply caulk or sealants, but this isn’t always the case. You can check around your home to see if this was done, and if not, you can have a specialist come to seal them up for you.
Install Covers on Chimneys and Vents
You can’t seal up certain areas of your home, such as vents and chimneys, but you can install a cover to help block out unwanted pests. This is done using a fine wire mesh hardwire cloth. You can hire a contractor to install this for you. There may also be holes on the roof that you don’t know about, which can be scoped by a contractor. A chimney cap is another option if you have a fireplace in your home. Make sure to check all areas of your home, including the attic and basement for additional vents and crawl spaces.
